Alongside my work building boats for clients is my research documenting traditional boatbuilding traditions in an effort to preserve them for future generations. Most of my work has taken place in Japan, but I have found time to also document the trapping boats of Lake Champlain, the indigenous boats of the Tao People of Taiwan, cormorant fishing in Guilin, China, and the last dory builder of Shelburne, Nova Scotia.
I am often asked: What is the most difficult part of Japanese boatbuilding? Less than half in jest I respond: Raising the funds to do the work. My research and writing has depended on the generosity of individuals and foundations. But raising funds for such an esoteric subject is definitely a challenge.
Direct donations help me cover the costs of researching, publishing, and teaching the results of this documentation.
Thank you for your support.
